How to Stop a Leaking Pipe Temporarily: Methods, Limits and When Not To

A temporary repair is a way of buying controlled time, not a substitute for a proper one. Here is what to isolate first, which methods hold on which pipe, what each realistically achieves, and the four situations where attempting one makes things worse.

Isolate before you attempt anything

Every temporary repair works better on a pipe that is not under pressure, and several do not work at all on one that is. Before you reach for tape or putty, close the nearest valve that removes pressure from the failed section. That single step turns a spreading emergency into a contained problem, and it is the part people skip while busy catching water in a bowl.

On a cold supply the internal stop tap is the one that matters, and in a London property it is rarely where you expect: under the kitchen sink, in a hall cupboard, behind a bath panel, or in a flat, sometimes in a communal riser cupboard on the landing.   • Cold mains supply. Internal stop tap first. If it will not close, the external stop valve in the footpath usually will, though it needs a key and, in a shared supply, affects your neighbours too.
  • Hot water and stored cold. Close the gate valve on the cylinder feed or the tank outlet, then run the affected taps to drop the level below the leak.
  • Central heating pipework. Switch the boiler off, isolate the filling loop, and close the valves at each end of the run if there are any. On a sealed system the circuit stays pressurised until it is drained or vented.
  • Waste and soil pipes. There is no valve. Stop using the appliance above the leak, which is the only isolation available.

Once the water is off, open the lowest tap on that circuit and let the pipe drain. Copper and plastic both hold a surprising amount of standing water, and nothing sticks to a wet pipe.

Work out what you are actually looking at

The right method depends on two things: what the pipe is made of, and how it has failed. Getting either wrong is the reason most home repairs let go an hour later.

The methods that actually hold, and the ones that do not

There are only a handful of genuine options, and the marketing around some of them is considerably better than their performance. What follows is what each one does, honestly.

Pipe repair clamps

A repair clamp is a hinged metal shell with a rubber liner that bolts around the pipe and compresses the liner over the defect. On a straight section of copper or steel with a pinhole or short split it is the most reliable option available to a non-specialist, and the only one here that works against full mains pressure with any consistency. It needs clean, round, straight pipe either side of the damage. It will not seal over a joint, a bend or a pipe gone oval, and where the surrounding metal is thin with corrosion the clamp simply moves the failure to the edge of the shell.

Self-amalgamating silicone tape

This is not insulating tape. It is a stretchable silicone ribbon with no adhesive that fuses to itself under tension, forming a single rubber sleeve. Stretched hard and wrapped with generous overlap well beyond the defect in both directions, it will hold back a weep or a pinhole. It is genuinely useful on low pressure pipework, on waste, and on awkward shapes a clamp cannot grip. It struggles at full mains pressure, it will not bridge a split of any length, and it must go onto a dry, clean pipe, which is why draining down first is not optional.

Epoxy putty

A two-part putty, kneaded until the colour is uniform and pressed hard over a pinhole so it keys into the surface, then feathered well past the defect. It cures to a hard solid and can take moderate pressure once fully set. Its weaknesses are specific: it wants a dry, keyed, degreased surface, it has a short working time, it cures poorly when cold, and it is useless on anything wet or under flow. It is a pinhole repair, not a split repair, and a common mistake is to mould it over a joint that is failing for mechanical reasons, where the putty simply cracks off.

Rubber and jubilee clip, the improvised version

A section of dense rubber, cut from an inner tube or a thick glove, wrapped over the defect and clamped with two or three worm-drive hose clips is the field version of a repair clamp. It works on the same principle and is a reasonable improvisation when nothing else is to hand. It is less even in its compression, so it needs more clips than seems necessary, spaced along the wrap rather than bunched at the middle.

Cutting out and fitting a push-fit coupler

On plastic pipe, and on copper with the right fitting, cutting the damaged section out and inserting a slip coupler or a demountable push-fit fitting is not really a temporary repair at all. Done properly, with a square cut, a deburred end, the insert stem in place on plastic and the pipe pushed fully home, it is a permanent repair. It is also the only option here that restores the pipe rather than dressing the failure. It belongs in a temporary repair article only because most people lack the fitting, the cutter or the room to work, and attempting it badly is worse than a clamp.

What a temporary repair actually buys you

It is tempting to think in hours, and that is the wrong unit. A temporary repair has no shelf life so much as a set of conditions under which it holds, and it fails when one of those changes rather than when a clock runs out.

A clamp on a sound, straight, cold pipe at steady pressure can sit quietly for a long time. The same clamp on a hot pipe expanding and contracting through every heating cycle relaxes and weeps far sooner. Tape that holds while the system is drained often lets go the moment full pressure returns. Putty that cures in a warm airing cupboard may never harden under a cold suspended floor.

The honest framing is this: a temporary repair buys a dry room and a working supply until an engineer arrives, on borrowed time from the moment it is made. Every one of these methods is a patch over a pipe that has already proved it will fail.

Check it, then check it again

After any temporary repair, restore pressure slowly rather than throwing the stop tap fully open, and watch the repair while the pipe comes back up. Then leave a dry sheet of kitchen paper underneath it and look at that paper an hour later, and again in the morning. Paper shows a weep that a dark wet pipe hides completely. What a bad temporary repair does to the permanent one

Some improvisations are neutral. Others actively increase the cost and difficulty of the proper repair, and it is worth knowing which is which before you commit.

  • Adhesives and tapes with residue. Anything that leaves glue on the pipe has to be cleaned back to bright metal before a solder joint or a compression olive will seal. That is time on the invoice.
  • Overtightened compression fittings. A crushed olive usually means cutting the fitting out, and on a short tail there may not be enough pipe left to remake the joint without a coupler.
  • Heat applied near a plastic fitting. Blowtorch work close to push-fit components damages the O-rings you cannot see, which then fail weeks later somewhere adjacent.
  • Clamps left on corroded pipe. The clamp holds, the corrosion continues underneath it, and the eventual failure is a longer split than the original.
  • Concealing the repair. Boxing in or re-laying flooring over a patched pipe removes the one thing that made it safe, which was being able to see it.
  • Fittings that are not approved for drinking water. Under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 anything installed on the supply must be suitable for contact with wholesome water. A WRAS approved fitting satisfies that. An automotive hose clip and a piece of inner tube does not, which is another reason it is a holding measure and not a repair.

Where the failed section is buried, in a screed, under a solid floor or below ground, none of this applies in the first place. When not to attempt a temporary repair at all

There are situations where the sensible move is to isolate, contain and wait, and where attempting a repair makes the outcome materially worse.

That last row is worth dwelling on. A ceiling that has taken a load of water can come down as a single sheet, and people get hurt standing underneath it with a bucket. Supply, heating and waste behave differently

The same defect on three different systems is three different problems, and treating them alike is a common error.

A cold supply pipe is at mains pressure continuously, which is why so few improvised repairs hold on one and why a clamp is usually the only realistic option. It is also the system where contamination matters, and where the water regulations apply to anything you fit.

A heating circuit is at low pressure but cycles hot and cold constantly, so thermal movement works every repair loose over time. It is also a closed system containing inhibitor, so a leak that appears trivial is steadily removing corrosion protection and drawing fresh oxygenated water in through the filling loop. A circuit losing pressure repeatedly needs the cause found rather than the pressure topped up, which is the subject of finding a central heating leak.

A waste or soil pipe carries no pressure at all, only intermittent flow, which makes tape and compression joints far more effective than they would be elsewhere. The catch is that waste leaks are often only visible while the appliance above is draining, so the fault is easy to lose and easy to misattribute to the appliance itself.

Across all three the decision point is the same. If the pipe is accessible, sound either side of the defect and the failure is small, a temporary repair buys controlled time. If any of those is untrue, stay isolated and have it properly repaired.

Will self-amalgamating tape hold on a mains water pipe?

Sometimes, and not reliably. Self-amalgamating silicone tape fuses to itself into a rubber sleeve and will contain a weep or a pinhole on a clean, dry, drained pipe. Full mains pressure is a different proposition, and the tape is most likely to let go at the moment you restore the supply. Use it to keep a room dry while the water is off, wrap well past the defect in both directions under heavy tension, and treat a repair clamp as the option that actually works under pressure.

How long will a temporary pipe repair last?

That is the wrong question, because these repairs do not have a shelf life so much as a set of conditions. A clamp on a straight, cold, sound pipe at steady pressure can hold for a long time. The same clamp on a hot pipe that expands and contracts every heating cycle relaxes far sooner, and putty that never fully cured in the cold may fail without warning. Treat any temporary repair as being on borrowed time from the moment you make it, and keep it visible.

Can I use epoxy putty on a pipe that is still dripping?

No. Epoxy putty needs a dry, clean, keyed surface to bond to, and water at the defect prevents it keying at all. Isolate the pipe, open the lowest tap on that circuit to drain it, dry the area thoroughly and abrade the surface before applying. It also cures poorly in cold conditions, which matters under a suspended floor or in an unheated void. Putty is a pinhole repair on an accessible dry pipe, and it will not bridge a split.

What should I never try to patch myself?

Lead supply pipe, because it deforms under a clamp and patching leaves lead in contact with drinking water. Anything gas, which is an emergency for the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 and then a Gas Safe registered engineer. Any pipe close to live electrics until the circuit is isolated. Buried or screeded pipework, where the visible damp is rarely above the defect. And anything hot, both for the scald risk and because nothing seals reliably at temperature.

Does a temporary repair make the permanent repair more expensive?

It can. Adhesive residue has to be cleaned back to bright metal before a solder joint or compression olive will seal. An overtightened nut that has crushed the olive usually means cutting the fitting out. Blowtorch heat near push-fit components damages O-rings that fail weeks later. A clamp left on corroded pipe hides corrosion that keeps spreading. A clean clamp or a wrap of tape on sound pipe, left visible, costs the eventual repair nothing.

Do I have to tell my insurer about a temporary repair?

Tell them about the leak, and mention that a temporary repair was made. Stopping further damage is a duty under your policy, so nobody will criticise you for it. The thing to avoid is discarding the failed section of pipe, because that piece is the best evidence that the failure was sudden rather than gradual, and gradual damage is the most common reason an escape of water claim is reduced. Keep the part, photograph the leak before you patch it, and keep the invoice.
